Less 365 and a New Illustration

Posted on September 5, 2010 | 5:03 pm

Before I moved to San Jose 1.5 months ago, I told myself that I didn't own that much stuff. Sure, I had a room of my own and a few things around the house but it wasn't like I had a LOT of possessions. That view completely changed when it came time to box everything up and shove it into a small 8' x 7' x 6' container with all of my boyfriend's possessions. Suddenly I realized I really DID own a lot of stuff. Lots of little stuff that gets shoved into drawers, sits on dressers, or pokes out...

I've Been Published!!!

Posted on September 3, 2010 | 11:15 am

Finally I can share the exciting news that I've been dying to share ever since I got a nice package in the mail last weekend. You might remember the book I was illustrating at the beginning of the year, "Dakota: Or What's A Heaven For." Well, I'm pleased to announce that I can now share those illustrations with you because an excerpt of the book has now been published in the Michigan Quarterly Review journal! The author was kind enough to send me a copy of the journal and I now have my very...

Wednesday Artist Feature: Kathi Roussel

Posted on September 1, 2010 | 10:14 am

Etsy has that lovely new feature when you can find new shops that are suggested to you through the shops already in your favorites. That is exactly how I found Kathi Roussel's whimsical little jewelry shop! Her work is exquisitely photographed and wonderfully crafted. Each piece seems to have a little story behind its making and it's easy to see how much care and love she puts into each one. She kindly agreed to be featured ...

1st day of school teaching

Posted on August 31, 2010 | 11:02 am

I truly believe that life experiences can be more enlightening than college when it comes to what you don't want to do when you 'grow up'. Since I never took an education course, I foolishly thought it wouldn't be too hard to take on a few extra shifts at the elementary school where I am training to be a tutor. Boy, did I get schooled!I'm going to keep the details of my first day to a bullet point list so as not to bore you (and so I don't have to relive it all over again in graphic...

Introducing Paul, the bike

Posted on August 29, 2010 | 11:14 am

I've learned from yesterday's outing with my boyfriend's sister and her family that Monterey Bay is a gorgeous place full of seagulls, sea lions (my first time seeing them!), and clam chowder. Literally, every other shop on the wharf has a lady standing outside with clam chowder in a bread bowl sample. The plastic cups that you were supposed to tip into your mouth just weren't that appealing though so I still have never tried clam chowder. I know, I know, it's probably one of the seven...

Feeding the Moon and a Magpie

Posted on August 27, 2010 | 10:35 am

I've been more creatively productive this last week than I was all summer. It may be the fact that my boyfriend goes to work-study and school now so I have most of the day to myself. Or it may be the fact that I start my new job on Monday. Whatever the reason, I've been pumping out illustrations in lightning speed and am really pleased with the results (although my hand is mad at me because it's been working itself into cramps for me).First off, I have to relate some amazing job news. I've...

Be a Thriving Artist

Posted on August 25, 2010 | 12:49 pm

Have you ever received something in the mail exactly when you needed it? As if the universe and the USPS postal service had joined together and said, 'Yes, I think she needs this now.' Something exactly like this happened to me a few weeks back and I thought that now was the time to share it, when I'm dealing with the same feelings again. At the time I had just turned down an opportunity to show at a gallery in San Francisco. Now before you think I'm crazy, you need to know a few things about ...

New illustrations

Posted on August 24, 2010 | 12:01 pm

For this whole week I'll be feeling a bit like a housewife. My boyfriend has started his work-study job in the linguistics department where he spends his mornings copying papers and answering telephones. That means that I've got the apartment to myself until lunchtime most days and as soon as school starts on Thursday, for most of the day!I don't feel like a housewife in that I cook or clean while he's gone. (Well, technically I do clean a little but that's only because it's easier to do it...

SF Featured Artist: Riley Noehren

Posted on August 23, 2010 | 12:00 am

A few weeks back I took a wonderful leap into the artistic community here in my new home area and joined the SF Etsy team! They're an extremely helpful and supportive group of Etsy artists who always have the answers to everything. One of those lovely ladies is Rily Noehren, a local SF screenprinter, with a shop full of colorful goodies! What is your artistic background? As a very little kid, I had the good fortune of winning a string of...

Attack of the Packaging Monster!

Posted on August 21, 2010 | 11:39 am

It's the weekend! I would have spent it riding my new bike but the universe conspired against me. It was nice enough to let me have all of the parts delivered on time, but one of them was the wrong color. Yes, yes, I know, you're probably thinking I'm being picky. But when you set your heart on white cables to go with your white handlebar tape and white TREK name, black just won't cut it. We made good use of the mixed order though (since the company didn't want us to return them) and did a ...
