About the Item
I designed the Owie Care Bag as a simple way to sooth all those bumps and bruises that are the inevitable result of babies and toddlers learning about their world. We all wish that they didn't have to get "owies", as my grandkids call them. But, they happen. And when they do, you will be prepared! . As we have all learned from caring for little ones, it's not always that the child really needs medical attention, more likely just extra loving attention. This soft little bag will help you to provide the much needed "mental care", much the way a bandaide seems to be the cure all for any number of issues with little ones.
I decided to put them in sets of three so that two could always be in the freezer ready to go, and the third one would be available to warm in the microwave. Research shows that a warm bag, like those in this set, can help to sooth a fussy, irritable baby or child I'm not going to try to tell you how long it will take to make them cold/hot enough due to the great variety of freezers and microwaves, as well as your personal preferences for heat and cold. You know your own equipment and needs best.
Each Owie Care Bag is actually made of 2 bags, which makes this a product unique to my shop! The outside bag, always made of a very soft cotton flannel, measures 6.5"x6.5" and has an envelope style back. I decided to use that closing method because I wanted to avoid the roughness of the hook and loop type fasteners or snaps that could irritate tender skin. I also made the sections that bypass one another quite long so that little hands wouldn't be able to remove the inside bag quite as easily! The second picture shows the back closing as well as how the inner bag can be removed. The inside bag is made of PUL fabric which is silky soft, as well as waterproof, and measures 5"x5". This set contains one each of fuchsia, lavender,and pink PUL. The flannel fabrics used are a print of cutie monkeys, cupcakes, and hearts, a solid pale pink, and a solid fuchsia. All corners on both sets of bags are double stitched for extra strength and security. The outer bag is top stitched 1/2" from the edge to add visual interest and extra durability.
The inside bag is filled with approximately 1 cup of rice - my research showed that this was among the most comforting to use and that it holds the cold and heat well. I would recommend that the inside PUL bags be placed in the freezer in a plastic baggie since they may absorb freezer odors. The flannel outer bags can be washed and dried very easily - a fact that I knew was important to busy caregivers! All fabric was machine washed (cold water) and dried(regular setting) before I began sewing, using baby/child friendly laundry products. You can be sure that this extra fabric care will eliminate shrinking during what will not doubt be frequent washings!
A woven label with my shop logo and name has been sewn just under the outside back flap of each of the Owie Care Bags. The hangtag, attached by ribbon, lists the item, shop address, and care instructions.
I have done "field testing" with my own grandchildren as well as children in other child care situations to be sure that this product meets the needs of children of all sizes and their caregivers. They passed with flying colors and are very much in demand by the children who use them!
