Many years ago I began making candles in my kitchen from leftover wax. Tending the slowly melting wax was a meditation, the process soothing and unhurried. I collected used candles from friends, and gave back new, handmade candles as gifts. I bought paraffin and beeswax to supplement, and experimented with dyes and fragrances. In those days, the explosion of the aromatherapy market led to shortages of lavender-based products in the shop where I worked. I secretly decided that my mom's lavender in Virginia probably smelled just as good as lavender grown on Mont Blanc, and my lavender farm dream was born.
