YouTube: Outside the Box Promotion for your Business

YouTube can be a powerful tool for your business. In the world of online retail, you always need to consider things from a potential buyers perspective. Unlike a brick and mortar store, a customer does not have the option of seeing your items up close and personal. They can’t touch it and get a good idea for what it will look like (unless you are a professional photographer and have covered every angle). For those of us that don’t fall into this category, one very viable option is YouTube.  Once only known for it’s crazy videos of skateboarders and silly stunts, this broadcast yourself network is now a great resource for small business owners and marketers.

In this video, Etsy shop owner Chrystal of Chrystalyn Jewelry created a simple “How To Rock Your Hairpiece” video. I love that we get a glimpse of the “artist” behind the shop. I’ve seen her hairpieces online but honestly had no clue how to wear them. Chrystal gives us that much needed visual that is missing from an online store. “So THATS what that is for…” My only suggestion for her next installment would be to add a text slide to the beginning and end of her video with her shop web address and shop name. Just to help complete strangers that stumble onto the video remember her. Other than that Chrystal, you are beautiful and thanks for helping us rock our hairpieces!

What are your thoughts on using YouTube to market your small business? Would your blog readers appreciate a tutorial now and again? What about a quick slide show featuring your summer sale items?

This is fabulous! The utube videos have really helped me get more traffic as well. This is the future of selling your art/handmade I think. We need to demostrate more! I am in the planning stage to do more!!

Hmmm Great idea, now how do I relate it to vintage sewing patterns. I learned alot about rocking clippers, I have only been using them in quilting. Thanks for clueing me in. Doti

Michele – Anyone can do this… just let your personality shine through. I practiced quite a bit to get it the way I wanted it, but more than that… to get my passion for my product to really come out. I think that's the real key to selling, demonstrating, and doing what you love!

Doti – You could always demo a mini project that doesn't take long. Or, photograph the different steps for a project and put them into a slideshow like Amber suggested! Oh, you could even do a mini fashion show and have someone model a few finished pieces. That would be so fun.

I've just signed up with YouTube for this reason. It's a great idea. I now need to think of something to upload.
