Time is a precious resource in all types of business.  When it come to managing your time when running a fulltime craft business there never seems to be enough of it.  With marketing, designing, listing, shipping, and so on on your plate time management  is a must.  Gaylin Walli shared some great tips on managing time over on Handmade News, and I wanted to share them with our readers.

I’ve spent a great deal of my career as a professional writer organizing the things I do. If it were possible to blame genetics for this, I would rest the source of my near-anal-retentive habits on my father. My mother floats through life with free-spirited attitude that he certainly lacks. In my quest to keep a foot in both genetic camps when it comes to time management, I’ve settled on the following things that I practice regularly to keep me sane.

Time Management Tip #1: Make it easy to do your job.

As a writer, my key to successful time management revolves around actually writing. To make that easier, we decided the expense of two computers for my writing was well worth it. I juggle a professional writing career with private writing and running a small business. And lets not count all those hobbies. My career would be far harder if I didn’t have a computer that stays on my working desk and one that is portable. Having two computers allows me to work from anywhere in the house or yard or to even take one with me when I have to be on the go.

Time Management Tip #2: Break things down into smaller tasks.

I simply cannot predict when the Muse of writing will strike me. Sometimes it happens at the most inopportune times (as evidenced by the stacks of sticky notes when I can’t even get as far as the computer). Because of these unpredictable interruptions, I have to do other, non-writing tasks, in small chunks. This allows me some small chance of completing things in one go rather than having whatever it was that I was doing interrupted by actual work.
