Ever wonder how successful shops get their name out there without spending a ton of money?  Here are some quick, easy and inexpensive tips for getting your brand noticed.

  • Create a consistent online presence.  Have your avatar or profile picture be a representative of what you do and keep it constant across all social media venues. When you post comments on blogs or Facebook and your avatar is part of your branding, people will be more likely to click on your information.
  • Set up and use your Google Analytics.  When checking traffic sources on Google Analytics and you see any blogs or sites that mention your shop, check out the site and see where/why you’re mentioned.  Contact them and offer to submit content  or even see if they have inexpensive advertising slots.  If it’s a road people already traveled to get to you, concentrate on it and other people will travel it  too.
  • Put product photos and website information on your packaging and business cards.  When customers receive your product and then they see pictures of other items you carry, that encourages repeat customers.  Moo is a great source for business cards or labels that include product images.  They even carry cards you can pull pictures directly from your Etsy shop.
  • Participate in the Handmade Spark Community.  Beyond your Handmade Spark Mini Site which gets you found through our SEO marketing service, we have built a fantastic online community full of artists, crafters and small business owners.  Our blog is crammed with useful information and we interact with thousands of folks across Twitter, Facebook and other social media venues.  Reach out, socialize through these venues and connect with other artists and potential customers. For less than 20 cents a day your brand gets found in searches and seen all across the net.

I can vouch for the first tip! In all the images I use for my avatars I’m wearing one of my creations and I make sure the feeling it conveys is that of a bright, bubbly personality.

Google Analytics really is a heaven-sent tool. Plus, if you’re nosy like me, you love to see how google has found your page – most unusual search term so far for me was “evil unicorn”. No, I’m not one :)

Have you registered it on Gravatar.com? You need to open an account, you register your website and your email address (that you will use for comments) and it gets picked up on most blogs – I think Typepad still eludes them, though.

Some really great tips. you can end up spending so much money and getting nothing! also have to be careful not to hide behind your avatar. I think you should still be a person with your own personality vs. the faceless company. Part of the appeal of small business is that we actually care and are real people, not just hired worker drones.
