Posting Your First Blog Post (Lesson 3)

Now that you have all your setting the way you like them is is now time to start crafting your first blog post. Blogger has a very user friendly blog writing interface, and in this next lesson I will be walking you through ins and outs of post that first post!
The first step is to log in to your Blogger account and navigate to the New Post tab. You want to make sure that you have the “Compose” tap clicked. Otherwise you will be looking at the Html code. We will be looking at how to understand and edit the html code of your blog posts in a later lesson.
The next screen shot breaks the blog posting interface down into numbers. I will be explaining what each number does below.
1. Title. This is where you tell your readers and Google what your blog post is all about. You want to keep this grammatically correct with no weird spaces and type. Leave out periods, commas, parenthesis, and so on. You also want to make sure your title contains a keyword that fits with the post. For example if you are writing about a how to make a wire-wrapped pendant, your title should be “Wire Wrapped Pendant Tutorial” We will be covering keyword finding and writing in future lessons.
2. Undo button. This is a great tool that Blogger ju
st added to it’s new editor. This undo button will allow you to go back one step. This will come in very handy.
3. Font Selection. When you begin writing you can pick a font and this is where you will find it.
4. Font Size. This is important when breaking up content. Yo can make fonts larger or smaller.
5. Bold. Here is where you can make your type bold. For this all you need to do is highlight some text and hit the Bold button.
6. Html. Here is where you can edit your posts html. We will look into this a little bit deeper in future lessons.
7. Italic. Same as the Blod button you can highlight text and hit the Italic button to turn that text Italic
8. Strike Through. Here is the strike through button . You can use this in a case where you don’t want to delete text , but maybe you still want it to be readable. In the example below you could have written a post when your pendant was $30 and now it is on sale for $20. You would only really use this on preexisting blog posts. To add a strike through just highlight the text and hit the button.
9. Text Color. Picking a text color can be fun, but you have to be careful and make sure your readers can read everything. You can use colors to highlight certain words to catch your readers attention. Most visitors will scan a blog post for the keywords and if you have some of these subtly highlighted it may help your readers focus. and find what they are looking for.
10. Text Background Color. Here is another way to highlight some text. Again you don’t want to go over board. A highlight here and there will help pull focus.
11. Link. This button will allow you to create a link in your blog post. For example: CLICK HERE . You can make any text or picture clickable by simply highlighting and clicking the “Link” button. Just enter your link in the box provided. This is also called a hyper link.
12. Add a Picture. Adding pictures to your blog post when blogging in the handmade scene is always a good idea. Pictures add a more visual aspect to your blog. Also Google like pictures. That is why they have the Google Image Search.
Step One: Click the Picture button and a screen will pop up and allow you to pick pictures from your computer or from the Web.
Once you have uploaded your picture highlight the one you want to add to your post and hit ok.
Blogger will add your picture to your post and this is where you can pick where you want it yo justified left, right or canter. You can also pick the size you would like small, medium, or larger.
You can also customize the size of your picture by double clicking on the picture and grabbing the corner and dragging it to the size you want. Be careful not to go larger then the original uploaded picture as it will turn our pixelated and bury.
13. Align Text. Here is where you will be able to align your text and pictures in the body of your post.
14. Numbered List. If you are creating a list , using the number list is a nice way to keep your list all lined up. To move on to the next number just hit enter and your next number is created below.
15. Bullet Points. Bullet points are another nice way to organize a list. Bullets will also keep everything all lined up. To move on to the next bullet just hit enter and your next bullet is created below.
16. Quote. Adding a quote is simple with Bloggers quote button. Just highlight the text and hit the button.
17. Remove formatting. Lets say that you want make a word blue, bold , and italic and you want it to be normal. Just highlight the word or multiple words and hit the “Remove formatting” button. This will take away any formatting you did to the word.
18. Page Break. This function will shorten your blog post and will add a more link. Blogger has been having trouble with this function.
19. Post Options. In the post options you will find a few useful options.
- Allow Comments. Here is where you can turn comments on and off for specific posts. This option will only show if you have comments turned on like we talked about in Lesson 2
- Allow Backlinks. Same as the comments, here is where you cam allow linkbacks for one specific post.
- Post Date and Time. This can be a very important part of your blogging. If you want to schedule a blog in the future you can pick any time to have it post automatically to your blog.. This can help you save time by writing posts in advance and scheduling them to post throughout the week
- and 5. Leave these set to their default setting.
20. Labels. Blogger labels are used to help readers navigate around your blog. These should not be used as tags and only one or two should be used per post. Take a look at how I use labels to help my readers navigate on my Blogger blog:
These are all labels from my posts. When a reader clicks on Etsy traffic Tips it will show a page with every post that is labeled Etsy traffic Tips. This is on the side of my blog Check it out HERE
Here is my top navigation on my blog. You will notice a few of my important labels are here to help my readers find the posts they want to read.
Now you should feel comfortable about posting your first blog post. The Blogger post interface is simple and user friendly.
