I recently contacted Cherie of Studio Cherie to find out what she does to market her shop. Cherie’s Handmade Spark product pages consistently show up in google searches and I wanted to find out what she does to keep her Etsy shop fresh. Christmas Stocking Trio, Love, Joy, Peace | $100 | Studio Cherie

“You know, seeing that google search illustrates one of the things I do that works at least part of the time. I try to anticipate the trends. I did not know that Martha Stewart and others were talking about burlap christmas stockings until I looked at the search result you sent me. Since I am only one person and I have a lot to manage already, I can only count on releasing a couple of new products every season.

I have dozens of ideas of course, but without staff to make them all happen I have to focus on what I think might be the right thing at the right time. The burlap stockings came out of the fact that my Flickr photostream shows me that some burlap bags I made a couple of Summers ago are still generating consistent interest. A burlap tote pattern may have sold better for me than the stocking pattern in the short run, but I wanted to add something seasonal to my shop (because Etsy features seasonal items like crazy) - and I needed new stockings for my family. I had a feeling that burlap was going to be something people were searching.

Basically, when an emerging trend intersects with my needs, I jump on it and it shows up as new items in my shop.  The duffle, which has been my most popular product came about the same way. I feel like I was actually a little ahead of the curve on that one. A lot of big name designers have launched duffles this Fall whereas mine was launched about 18 months ago. That is the beauty of being small, I can launch a product quickly. The other thing is that I don’t have a lot invested in each launch, so if a new idea flops, I am not sitting on a container load of product.”~Cherie



This is fantastic! Two of Cherie’s online locations (Etsy and a Handmade Spark Product Page) are showing up on the first page for a search for “burlap stocking pattern.” By thinking ahead, she is now highly visible on this emerging trend.
