My Etsy Story: Natural Amber

My name is Amber, and I have been on ETSY since July of 2008. It has been a very long, but very rewarding journey for me here on ETSY. I started by adding a bunch of jewelry with what I thought were good pictures, but I eventually learned that setting up a shopping cart didn’t mean sales.

I started on ETSY selling mainly beaded jewelry made with gemstones, wood, and shell which is why I came up with the name Natural Amber Jewelry, but as my shop and my tastes changed I fell in love with Vintage and over the last year have been dedicating alot of my new listings to the new and unique findings and cabochons I find on ETSY. There is nothing like buying from another ETSIAN and especially vintage supplies, you know your pieces are going to be unique and harder to find.

What I  have  learned about business since I  launched my  Etsy shop?

I have learned that selling jewelry means alot of hard work and outside promotion. Being in the most saturated category I am constantly learning new ways to set myself apart from other sellers, and have learned that you have to go outside of ETSY to find buyers. You can not rely on a shopping cart alone.

Tell us one piece of advice for new sellers.
My one piece of advice for new sellers would be never give up, there is always ways to improve your shop and cut out “fat”, what doesn’t work. I am always reviewing the Storque Blog for new advice, as well as Handmade Spark, and other ETSY Team Blogs. You can never stop learning, and improving your store.

I agree with you about never giving up. When I am not busy making our sushi candles and other natural wax candles or filling orders, during the slow times is when I try to improve our shop. Re-take photos or redo your listings. Keep it fresh.

Very wise words. I started as a buyer on Etsy before starting a shop for my handbags, which has been up for about 18 months now.

My sales definitely aren’t plentiful, but I try really hard and keep at it. I set up a jewellery shop about a month ago, which jasn’t had a sale as yet, but am just starting to realise, as you said jewellery is the most saturated category, so we’ll see what happens.

Sometimes I do worry about pricing as being in England, all our materials etc are far more expensize than in the US, so that and the exchange rate, makes things more than some US peers.

I ‘do’ love Etsy so so much, and dream of doing it full time at some point.
