What does Wall Street have in common with you?  E-commerce!

Yes, e-commerce is the darling new buzzword, the next big thing to invest in. E-commerce? Seriously? Doesn’t anybody remember the infamous dot.com boom and, more importantly, the dot.com bust that followed it? Yes. But now things are different.

Sure, after the dotcom bomb, e-commerce had a stench from Pets.com, Webvan, and other expensive duds. But savvy investors who looked past those failures and embraced true innovation have put hundreds of millions of dollars into rising stars. From Groupon to Etsy and FreshDirect to Diapers.com, a cunning new breed of e-commerce players should be ready to test the public markets soon.

Here’s one way to think about it. In the free, ad-supported media world, people spend their time to save money. In e-commerce, people spend their money to save time. Which business would you rather be in?

This can have huge implications for Etsy, but what about for Etsy sellers? I think that yes: it can and it will. Huge. When an investor hears a new buzzword, like the word “Etsy” for example, he or she will either know about it, or will quickly hunt around to learn more.

The buzzword gets more buzz, and “Etsy” becomes more familiar not only on Wall Street but on Main Street. Soon, Etsy becomes a household word. Yes, I know: it is already a household word in my home too! But think about how many times you have explained what Etsy “is” to someone. Now imagine them already knowing about Etsy. What a nice day that will be!

For now you sell your items on Etsy, and maybe one day you’ll be able to own a piece of Etsy too!
