Creative Spark – Polymer Clay Techniques – Mixed Media

protect what you treasure / bottle

So far in other articles about polymer clay techniques I’ve looked at how the myriad of colors polymer clay comes in can be used to create beautiful effects and also some amazing sculpture ideas.

This week it’s mixed media.  You can add your polymer clay creations to pretty much anything to create mini art installations like this one. But since polymer clay is baked in a low oven, adding other materials that don’t melt at low temperatures (such as metals) BEFORE baking can make for interesting, modern and very elegant fine jewelry.  One of the things I love about adding precious metals like silver or copper to polymer clay is that it adds a bit of weight to the finished piece.  I must say, one of my only disappointments when working with all the various polymer brands is that they are a little too light and can feel slightly ‘cheap’ as a result. I would definitely not consider the following wonderful pieces of art as cheap!

This brooch combines polymer with sterling silver and gold leaf for a funky effect.

Satellite Brooch - Black, White and Red

Gorgeous handmade sterling silver bezels house the marbled polymer hugs and kisses in this necklace.

Again, coupling sterling silver with the bright hues of polymer clay creates beautiful and modern wearable artworks.

Blue Mollusk

This marvelous mobile uses the simple technique of molding polymer shapes around stainless steel rods.

As always, I’d love you to share your work with us.  Leave a comment or a link!

Next week I’ll be looking at polymer clay millefiori – very tricky and incredibly pretty.

Hi Pepe: I just LOVE the items featured in your article today. I would love to work with clay but my granddaughter snags it whenever I have it in the house and I end up baking little dinosaurs and such. One day, we painted beach rocks and she made legs out of polymer clay and we baked them. Turned out cute, actually. How is it done with the clay in silver frames? Is that clay too?

Mobiles are one of my absolute favorite things! Constantly in motion yet quiet and beautiful.

    Thanks for this wonderful series!

thanks Kay for your comments, I love mobiles too, in fact after writing this series of posts I thought an article on etsy mobiles would be fun :)

In answer to your question, reading the artist's info I think the hugs and kisses are done with moulded PMC (Precious metal clay). And the Blue Mollusk is a pre-made sterling silver 'frame' that the polymer clay has then been added too and baked.
