32,000 Followers on Twitter – Top 10 Tips – Q&A

32000 Twitter Followers

I  have been on Twitter for about under 2 years.   I have 8  Twitter pages with my followers totaling over 90,000.  My main Twitter page is @timothyadam, this was my first Twitter page.  I use Twitter to connect with other sellers and potential customers.

Here are my top 10 tips for running a successful Twitter page:

  1. Understand what Twitter is – terminology – how to use everything Twitter has to offer.
  2. Design a professional looking background.   Catch the eye of your followers and inform them.  Use the real estate Twitter gives you.
  3. Write a good description  for your bio, and add key words.  Also always included your website or Etsy shop.
  4. Build Twitter lists.  They can help you find what you are looking for quickly.  Also adding others to your lists may prompt others to ad you to their lists.
  5. Post tweets that promote conversation:  Instead of just posting  “Hey look at my new item listed on Etsy”  Try ” Here is a new piece I have been working on, what do you think?”  This type of tweet can start conversation.
  6. Find targeted followers to follow to grow your following.  I like to use a few different sites to find my targeted followers.  First is Tweepi.com, and this is by far the best twitter tool out there to manage your Twitter followers.  Second is Handmade Spark,  here you can find super targeted Twitter pages in the handmade scene.  Lastly is  Wefollow.com, and this is another place to find those targeted Twitter pages you want to follow
  7. Mix it up.  Don’t just tweet about what you are doing.  Find other things that interest you and may interest your followers.
  8. Retweet your followers.  If you are finding that no one if retweeting what you are saying, you may need to do some retweeting yourself.  Find some great tweets from your followers and retweet, and they may reciprocate.  Be sure to thank your followers for retweeting your tweets.
  9. Always have fun with Twitter.  As soon as Twitter becomes a chore, you should stop.
  10. Use Hoot Suite to manage your Tweets.  Hoot Suite allows you schedule your tweets and all your Twitter accounts if you have more than one.

Now it is your turn to ask any questions you have about Twitter.  Feel free to post a comment and I will see what I can to answer them.  I may even post questions in this post and answer them in more detail!

Thank you for this post; it is so helpful to me. As a newbie on twitter, I felt that some of my questions have been answered. I’ve wondered how to attract new followers. Another question I had: how can I find very specific people with my same interests? Twitter has the search categories, but they are SO broad. Anyway, here I am: http://twitter.com/sarahmamma

Sarah: The best places to find targeted people to follow is to use the sites I listed in the article. I am currently using these site to grow my Twitter following.

Great post – thanks for the info. Still trying to figure out how to take advantage of Twitter….I somewhat “get” it. Checking out Tweepi now…hadn’t heard of it before! I definitely have been doing what you said though – following others that I come across from other tweeters…and a lot of the time they follow me back….so it does work.

Thank you, great info, how and where do you learn the ins and outs of twitter terminology?

Hi Tim, I’ve got a question for you…
I use twitter to post little updates and to see what my friends are up to… (I started using it about 4 years ago from a private account when the idea was just to put a little real-time blast out into the world and discuss with strangers).

The problem is, I don’t want to bury friends’ posts in thousands of other people I don’t know and honestly don’t care to always read. I know it’s a “marketing tool” but how many of those people actually turn into traceable sales that have never heard of your store before? I don’t actively follow anyone unless they are colleagues, and none of the fans that follow me seem terribly upset by that. Am I completely missing out by not following everyone who follows me and not adding people or searching for new “friends”?

    Hi Tim–

    Great stuff to know about.

    A few questions:

    1. I did join that some Twitter Business group (that I now can’t even find the link to)!… (is it Twib?… ). But really not sure how to make that work for me. The “vote for me” suggestion it had was really not my style.

    2. How can we make lists work for us? Both in terms of creating our own lists, and in being listed by others?

    Thanks!

Thanks, tim! I love using Twitter. I think it gets me lots of views, and hopefully some sales!

Thanks for that. I post new items onto Twitter all the time and it certainly increases the views, but I can’t say if I have had any sales from it. I like the idea though of asking people’s opinions of items, I will try that. I see people having conversations on Twitter but have never been able to start them myself, so this may be a good way of doing it.

Thanks for the great tips, Tim! Although I have been on Twitter for a while now I am still trying to figure it out, especially the Twitter Lists.
